What is Low Vision?

Low vision is any condition of the eyes that causes you to not be able to see as brightly, sharply, and/or clearly as you used to. There are many conditions that can cause low vision. Among the most common are glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, non-age-related macular degeneration, and cataracts. When you have low vision, you may have issues with reading, driving (especially at night), reading the expressions on the faces of others, and even performing your job or doing well in school. As you can tell, it is quite important that you get low vision treated as soon as possible if you are suffering from it.

What Should You Do if You Have Low Vision?

The first thing you need to do is to get a definite diagnosis. You may suspect you have low vision, and it could be something else altogether. Only a trained eye doctor will be able to tell you, so you must visit one and get an eye exam. Our eye doctor, Dr. Chris Koplos, will be able to tell you if you do, in fact, have low vision, and, if you do, she will be able to tell you the cause and recommend an appropriate treatment.

The treatment for low vision depends entirely on the condition that is causing it, as well as its severity. You may need medicated eye drops, eye exercises, special glasses or other types of lenses to strengthen your eyes and allow you to see better, new medication for the underlying cause of the low vision, or even surgery to correct it. You will consult closely with Dr. Koplos, who will guide you along the journey from low vision to better vision, and even vision preservation.
