Healthy eyes play a key role in your view of the world and your surroundings. When you notice changes to your vision or something seems odd about your eyes, you want to address the underlying conditions at an early stage. At University Vision Centre, we help improve your vision and provide the tools you need to keep your eyes healthy throughout your lifetime.

Basics for Healthy Eyes

The visual system and your eyes are complex. Multiple factors contribute to changes in your vision and the reasons for different changes depend on your lifestyle, situation and the specific risks you face.

Common ways to help keep your eyes healthy include:

  • Getting regular vision exams
  • Keeping your eye doctor informed about your health and vision history
  • Eating a well-balanced diet with a variety of fruits, vegetables and lean protein sources
  • Wearing sunglasses on bright and sunny days
  • Discussing concerns with an eye doctor, particularly when you work on a computer or engage in activities that may harm your eyes

Protecting your vision is an integrated process. When you have a physical health concern requiring medication or that may cause complications with your eyes, keep your eye doctor informed. Update any records when medical concerns arise and visit our office when you have questions about the impact of a medical condition on your vision. We also recommend extra vision exams during pregnancy or after any surgical procedure on your eyes.

Identifying Eye Health Conditions

The primary reason to visit an eye doctor regularly is early diagnosis. Although certain lifestyle choices contribute to vision concerns and you may not engage in the activities, like smoking, that may cause problems with your eyes, many conditions like glaucoma and cataracts may develop as part of the aging process.

Protecting your vision requires early treatment and diagnosis. During a comprehensive eye exam at our clinic, we check your eyes for changes in vision, astigmatism, cataracts, glaucoma, retinopathy and macular degeneration. We pay particular attention to potential risks when you have diabetes or other health concerns that may cause damage to your eyes. Early diagnosis allows us to provide appropriate treatment based on your situation and the level of damage to your eyes.

Addressing Complications

The treatments we offer for eye health complications depend on your situation and needs. At our office, we may recommend glasses or contact lenses to correct many concerns. For example, we use eyeglasses and contact lenses to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and gradual loss of vision from normal aging.

When we identify a health concern like dry eyes, glaucoma or cataracts, we may use prescription medications or eye drops to slow the progression of the condition. In some cases, we may recommend laser treatments or similar solutions.

Maintaining your vision and protecting your eyes from health complications may require a variety of tools and strategies. At our office, we recommend regular eye exams from an eye doctor to catch problems early and start appropriate treatment. To learn more, contact us today.
